Solar Photography Workshop with Stan Honda

Get ready for the total solar eclipse with a class on solar photography by celestial photographer extraordinaire, Stan Honda, for three days this June in Manhattan.

Presented by AAA, you must be a member of the organization to register and attend. Stan Honda is a professional photographer based in New York City, who spent over 34 years as a photojournalist covering national and international stories. After 17 years with Agence France-Presse, he now concentrates on independent projects including the night sky and giving workshops in New York and the southwest. Stan is a board member of the AAA and writes a photography column for Eyepiece.

This is an in-depth workshop about how to photograph the sun safely during all phases of an eclipse with a digital SLR or mirrorless camera through ordinary lenses. One class will be a daytime field trip to shoot the sun. Included in the class fee is a solar filter sheet that can be used on a camera lens.

Equipment: students should have a digital SLR with interchangeable lenses or mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses and a tripod. Smaller point and shoot cameras usually aren’t good for this kind of photography.

Requirements: Student should be able to operate their camera in the Manual mode. You should know how to change ISO, aperture and shutter speeds manually. Knowing how to focus manually is helpful.

Tuesday, June 20: The total eclipse—what to expect, how to plan, equipment needed, what kind of pictures do you want? Solar filter will be distributed. Optional—bring just your camera to class.

Saturday, June 24: Field trip to Central Park. Bring camera, lenses, tripod and solar filter. We’ll practice shooting the sun. (Clouded out date is Sunday, June 25).

Tuesday, June 27: Image processing. Single images and time-lapse sequences. Optional—bring laptop computer and pictures from field trip.

(Please be flexible on the field trip date since weather can alter our schedule.)

Time: classes start at 6:30 PM and go until 8:30 PM (except the field trip).

Location: all classes are held at Cicatelli Center, 505 8th Ave, at 35th St. in Manhattan, 20th Floor (except the June 24 field trip).

Registration Fee: $70, members only. If you are not an AAA member yet, please become a member first.
