PhotoPlus Expo 2018 brings fresh debate to the Industry

PhotoPlus Expo  2018 opens today with a slew of topics that are bringing the problems in the photography business to the forefront.

“PhotoPlus Expo is a wonderland for any visual content creator. Our large Expo hall is filled with hundreds of exhibitors demonstrating the latest imaging technologies, services and accessories,” explains Mike Gangel, Show Director at PhotoPlus Expo.

PhotoPlus Expo offers the widest selection of educational programming outside a formal university classroom. Presented by world class instructors, attendees will leave PhotoPlus with a new level of knowledge they can apply to their craft and their business.

Designed for professionals in the photographic and imaging industries as well as enthusiasts, PhotoPlus Expo -- http://www.photoplusexpo.com -- showcases the latest advances in photography, digital imaging and filmmaking. Held annually at the Javits Convention Center, attendees have the opportunity to explore an inspiring array of photography and imaging products and services - all from the industry's leading manufacturers. The show also offers seminars and intimate Photo Walks and Master Classes taught by world-renowned experts that focus on cutting-edge innovations and techniques.

The Keynote Presentations scheduled are:

Of Love & War, Lynsey Addario
When: Thursday, October 25, 12:45 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.
Sponsored by Nikon. Why would anyone willingly plunge headfirst into the war-torn areas of Afghanistan, Darfur, or Libya? For photojournalist Lynsey Addario, the short, simple answer is also the title of her new photobook: Of Love & War. In focusing on humanitarian and human-rights issues, Lynsey has built her career on capturing powerful images in dangerous environments around the world. She documents life in Afghanistan under the Taliban, the stark truth of sub-Saharan Africa, and the daily reality of women in the Middle East. Despite death threats and kidnappings, she continues photographing pivotal subjects for National Geographic, the New York Times, and Time. Join the Pulitzer Prize–winning photojournalist as she chronicles her harrowing work and explains what drives her despite having a family—to keep going back. Please note: This presentation contains graphic images suitable only for mature audiences. Lynsey will be signing books following the keynote presentation.

Social Media is Ruining Photography (A Debate)
When: Friday, October 26, 12:45 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.
Sponsored by PDN. No one doubts the power of social media for raising a photographer’s exposure or giving marginalized communities a platform to tell their stories, but social media also carries burdens and costs. Join in the lively debate, and vote for the debaters who mount the most persuasive arguments for and against the use of social media. Allen Murabayashi, Chairman & Co-Founder of PhotoShelter and Adriana Teresa Letorney, Founder, Visura, will be leading the teams going head to head in arguing the pros and cons of photographers’ use of social media.

Photography and Reality, Duane Michals
When: Saturday, October 27, 12:45 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.
Don’t miss this special keynote address by the illustrious artist Duane Michals, who made an indelible impact on visual storytelling, and will discuss his career as a photographer, writer and filmmaker. Bridging the gap between photography and philosophy, Michals’ work grapples with questions of metaphysics, personal identity and the nature of memory.
