Matthew Jensen bring his unique perspective and artist’s curiosity to AMONG TREES AND STONES: WALKING GREEN-WOOD, a special exhibit and walking tours created through his many walks through the cemetery from September 23 to November 29, 2017.
Pick up a copy of Jensen's Among Trees and Stones map at the Gothic Arch and strike out on your own self-guided walk of discoveries. Experience and explore Green-Wood with an eye toward mystery and serendipity, with majestic trees and historic monuments as landmarks. Leave the paths and wander to create your own personal expedition. Make your way to the Gate House at the cemetery’s entrance on Fort Hamilton Parkway where Jensen has assembled a room-sized cabinet of curiosities drawing from specimens and photographs he has amassed in his many walks through the cemetery, as well as from Green-Wood’s rarely seen collection of fine art and historic objects. The installation continues into a peaked attic space never before open to the public.
Put on some sensible shoes and join Matthew Jensen who will lead three fall walks on specific Saturdays - September 23, October 21, and November 18 - from 12:00PM to 3:00 PM, accompanied by various Green-Wood staff experts of art history, horticulture and preservation.
Jensen is a 2016 Guggenheim Fellow whose work is in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art. He has created site-specific projects throughout New York City, including the Queens Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the High Line, Wave Hill, and Brooklyn Bridge Park.
The exhibition at Green-Wood’s Fort Hamilton Gate House is open Saturdays and Sundays 12:00 – 4:00 PM or by appointment (contact the Green-Wood Historic Fund at 718-201-3071 or email@example.com).
The Gate House is located at Fort Hamilton Parkway and Micieli Place, easily accessible on the F and G trains at Fort Hamilton Station. The exhibition is not handicap accessible.
